NBA Mock Draft: Pre-lottery

  1. Boston Celtics: Markelle Fultz: PG – Washington

With the first pick in the draft, the Celtics need to draft the best player. Markelle Fultz is the best player in the draft. They already have Isaiah Thomas, but he has only 2-3 elite seasons left. It’s better to get rid of a star a year too early than a year too late. Thomas and Fultz may be able to coexist, but the long-term point guard for the Celtics should be Fultz. He’s the obvious choice.

  1. Phoenix Suns: Josh Jackson: SF – Kansas

The choice for the Suns is between Josh Jackson and Lonzo Ball. If the Suns are ready to trade away Eric Bledsoe, the choice should be Ball. If they want to keep Bledsoe after his career year, the choice should be Jackson. They are both similarly ranked players, so this pick will be made because of need. The Suns have emerging star Devin Booker as their shooting guard, but he’s not a good defender. They need a wing defender to start with Booker. T.J. Warren is a great offensive small forward, but he doesn’t fit in a starting lineup with Booker. He’d be a better sixth man off the bench. Jackson needs to improve his offensive game, but he has the potential to be a 3-and-D superstar.

  1. Cleveland Browns: Myles Garrett: DE – Texas A&M

Cleveland, don’t overthink this. With the number one pick, you have to select the top player in the draft. I know you need a quarterback, but there isn’t one worthy of the top pick in the draft. Myles Garrett is a generational pass rusher. This should be the easiest decision of the draft.

  1. San Francisco 49ers: Solomon Thomas: DE – Stanford

Although I’m not as high on Solomon Thomas as many others in the draft community, I think the 49ers will take him with the second pick in the draft. They’ll try to trade this pick, but I don’t think anyone will want to move into this spot. I’ve heard rumors that they might look at Jamal Adams, but I think the 49ers will try and build their defense by improving their defensive line. They drafted Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner with their first round picks in the last two drafts, but I think Thomas is better than both and is more versatile. If John Lynch wants a safety, then Adams would be a logical choice (even though I’d take Hooker to play a centerfielder role in their cover 3 defense). Safeties don’t usually get drafted this high, especially over pass rushers. Thomas would be an immediate impact starter for the 49ers.

NFL Mock Draft: what I would do

garrett.jpg

  1. Cleveland Browns: Myles Garrett: DE – Texas A&M

With the first pick, I’d take the best player on my board. Myles Garrett is hands down the best prospect in this draft class. He plays a premium position, and he was the most impactful player on the field every game. This is a no-brainer.

  1. San Francisco 49ers: Malik Hooker: FS – Ohio State

Many experts are projecting the 49ers to take Solomon Thomas, but I wouldn’t draft a defensive lineman in the first round for the third straight year. I think new general manager John Lynch will look to take someone at the position he played in the NFL. Although most draft experts prefer Jamal Adams, I think Malik Hooker is the best safety in the draft. He isn’t as versatile as Adams, but he’s an overall better player. He is extremely instinctive and has amazing ball skills. His range reminds me of Earl Thomas. He’s the perfect centerfielder to cover up mistakes made by the underneath coverage. Hooker is the second best player on my board and fills a need for the 49ers.
